The morning was foggy. Almost no one passed along the old road at the edge of the village. There was only one large, dried-up tree there, under which people sometimes left trash before quickly walking away.
But that day, an elderly man named Thomas heard a faint, choked whimper.
At first, he thought it was the wind playing through the branches, but the sound came again — more painful, more desperate.
“Who’s there…” Thomas whispered and walked closer to the tree.
When he saw the dog, his heart tightened. The dog was thin, dirty, and tightly tied to the tree trunk with a rope. There was so much fear in his eyes that the man couldn’t move for a moment. The animal didn’t even have the strength to bark. He only looked at him, as if begging, “Don’t leave.”
